What’s in a name? Do you remember your service of Ordination? I remember the event and all the emotions that accompanied my service of Ordination. The Ordination service was held on the campus of Western Illinois University, the site of many Central Illinois Annual Conference meetings. Bishop Woodie White presided and preached a sermon titled: “What’s in a name?”
Bishop White talked about the significance we give to a name. We are given a name at birth. We hear our name repeated in Holy Baptism. We hear our name as God calls us into ministry. We hear our name repeated as we take solemn vows in the covenant of Christian marriage. And, of course, think of the meaning of the names the prophet Isaiah gives to describe the fullness of the coming Messiah: “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:7).
My oldest Son, Blake Evan Grimmett, will be getting married on December 31, 2016. Yes, New Year’s Eve! I can’t imagine the emotion that will overcome both Brenda and I as we witness our Son at the altar taking vows of Christian marriage.
Our soon to be daughter-in-law, Kim Bailey, will assume the last name of Grimmett. Wow! What’s in a name?
May this Christmas be a celebration of the name and person of Jesus Christ!
